What is engineered wood?

Engineered wood flooring, unlike real hardwood floors, is made of a high-quality plywood core with a thin layer of hardwood flooring on top. Engineered wood flooring is a more cost-effective alternative, but it can’t be refinished as often as solid flooring. With proper maintenance, it can still last up to 30 years or more.

Engineered wood sizes

Engineered wood flooring planks are generally thinner than hardwood flooring planks, with a thickness of approximately 3/8 to 9/16 inches. However, they are usually sold in planks that are much wider and longer than traditional solid hardwood floors.

Benefits of engineered wood flooring

Engineered wood flooring offers great resistance to slightly lower and higher moisture levels than solid wood flooring, which adds to their appeal in regions with higher or lower than normal relative humidity.

Installation options

Due to the way engineered hardwood is manufactured, it can be installed in a variety of ways, including:

  • click and lock system
  • nailed or screwed down
  • glued down using flexible flooring adhesive
  • or floated over an underlay.

Cost-effective

One of the main benefits of engineered wood flooring is that it is less expensive than solid wood flooring while at the same time providing the same look and quality as solid hardwood flooring.

DIY vs professional installation

Because engineered hardwood is marketed more for homeowners that want to spend less on their flooring, they are also suggested to install them by themselves to further increase their savings. Because we want the best for our clients, we don't recommend installing engineered wood flooring on your own. Engineered wood flooring should be installed by a flooring professional that can measure cut and connect each plank properly.
